According to a WHO report,  mobile phone usage might increase the risk for certain kinds of brain cancers. A working group of 31 scientists from 14 countries arrived at this startling conclusion at a meeting at the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO/IARC) who completed a review of the available scientific evidence on cell-phone radiation and brain tumors.

The group  classified cellphones in the carcinogenic category 2B along with chemicals like the pesticide DDT and gasoline engine exhaust. This is the first time that WHO has linked mobiles with cancer, and endorsed the  earlier research study results that said just half an hour’s use a day could increase  the risk of brain cancer  up to 40 per cent . It is not yet clear about the high risk factor that the  cell-phone users might face because the radiation emitted by cell phones is non-ionizing and hence not potent enough to cause  damage body tissue the way that ionizing X-ray radiation can. However IARC says that the results of epidemiological studies of cell-phone users, indicate a strong  association between handset use and tumors.

Though the mobile phone industry was quick to point out that the devices had not been directly shown to cause cancer, the latest studies have created anxiety among the cell phone users all over the world considering the fact that it is one of the most popular communication and entertainment devices on planet earth today!
